Q: I am a dentist. A fasting patient requires urgent treatment e.g. extraction or draining abscess.
- Will this be permissible whilst fasting? Bear in mind
- an injection is required
- blood flows from extraction site
- water may be put into patients mouth
-
Will the fast need to be repeated?
-
Can elective (non-emergency) procedures be done whilst a patient is fasting, where every effort is made to see that patient does not swallow water put in mouth.
A: It is advisable for a fasting person to delay the extraction till after the fast. However, if the fasting patient urgently requires an extraction then all effort should be made to ensure that water or blood does not go down the throat. If after adopting all measures blood or water goes down the throat, one will not be sinful and only qadhaa will be wajib.
