RE: Gifts from broken engagement

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Me and this brother had been wanting to get married for 2 years. Now we are not because of very difficult circumstances. He bought me some things while we were ‘engaged’ such as some gold jewelry and other gifts. I used to wear it but now I’m not sure whether my prayers would be accepted or duas if I did. is it permissible? We do not have much contact anymore and I don’t know what to do with the things, also its not easy for me to give it back as he lives very far now (aussie). what shall I do?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

The gifts became your property and it is halal for you to use them. However, if it makes things worse for you emotionally, it may be wise to sell them and get different jewelry.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam.
Faraz Rabbani.
