Joining Prayers Before Travel

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Hamza Karamali, SunniPath Academy Teacher

I have seen people join there prayers before travel. For example its Dhuhr time, so they pray Dhuhr but by Asr time they will be traveling so they pray Asr with Dhuhr, is this right?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

assalamu `alaykum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh

It is permissible to join prayers when travelling. However, this dispensation may only be taken once one begins travelling. If one has not yet begun travelling, it is not valid to join prayers. One’s travel begins once one leaves the limits of the city where one is travelling from.

The scenario described in the question does not therefore result in a valid performance of the asr prayer.

And Allah Most High knows best.
