Can Zakat be Given to Step Mother and Stepsiblings?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

My father died (may Allah have mercy on him), and left behind a family of 3 people, my step mother and 2 kids, one daughter 2 years old and son 16 years old. They do not have any source of support apart from Allah. Is it permissible to regard what I spend on them of my own money as zakat, knowing that I am married and support another family of my own?

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

It is permissible to discharge ones Zakat to their step mother and stepsiblings. Whether one pays cash to them or brings grocery and other items of need to them, with the intention of Zakat, it will be considered permissible.
