The obligation of sending blessings on the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace)

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: Is it obligatory to send blessings on the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) every single time his name is mentioned?

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your question.

According to many scholars, it is obligatory to send blessings on the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) every time his name is mentioned. (Hashiyat al Bujayrami ala al Khatib)

Based on the hadith, ‘The cheap person is he before whom I am mentioned and who then does not send blessings upon me.’ (Tirmidhi and others)

The relied upon position, however, is that it is only obligatory the prayer. (Ianat al Talibin, Dimyati) Based on this, it would be merely recommended to send blessings on him every time his name is mentioned.
