I am very curious about the ruling of smoking weed (marijuana) in Islam.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Question:

I am very curious about the ruling of smoking weed (marijuana) in Islam. I know of a lot of people who do it because they say it is makruuhun tanziiha or a minor sin. Is this true or is it Haraam? And does it nullify your Salaat for 40 days as alcohol does?

Answer:

Smoking weed (marijuana) is totally Haraam (unlawful) in Islam. It is a major sin in Islam and is considered on the same degree of consuming intoxicants.

Since its substance is totally different from that of intoxicants, it may not bring about such impurity in the body as intoxicants do.

However, since it is an unlawful drug, it would naturally have its effect on the body. This does not mean that a person may give up Salaat for a certain amount of days. Instead it remains compulsory upon him/her to continue to perform the Salaat as usual.

And Allah knows best.
