Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Imam, i require more information on the shaving of the baby’s hair at birth, is this fardh? if possible kindly quote the relevant verse and or hadith as well as the religous significance of this act

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh

It is mustahab (desirable) to shave the hair of the baby on the seventh day upon birth of the baby. Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) shaved the hair of his grandchildren on the seventh day and also slaughtered two sheep (Bukhari). This is known as Aqeeqa.

And Allah knows best
