Do I Have to Send Blessings on the Prophet for My Dua to Be Valid?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question: Is it compulsory to send blessings on the Prophet(peace be upon him) before and after a supplication?

Answer: Walaikum assalam,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

No, sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) before and after one’s supplications (dua) is a recommended act—but neither obligatory, nor a condition for dua.

At the same time, it is best, closest to Prophetic encouragement, and most conducive to Allah’s fullest acceptance, to:
(1) begin one’s supplication (dua) with praise of Allah and blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him);
(2) turn with one’s heart to Allah in neediness before and during one’s supplications;
(3) ask Allah for the highest and most pleasing of matters; and
(4) choose the best of means of supplication—including the supplications of the Qur’an and the blessed supplications of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him & his folk).
