Quelling a pest infestation

Question: If one is dealing with a pest infestation, does it matter what means one uses to kill the pests? Does it also matter why you want to get rid of them?

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your important question.

When killing any animal, one may not cause unnecessary pain. (Tuhfa al Muhtaj, Ibn Hajar) If one can reasonably get rid of the pests less painfully, one may not simply torture them because one has the license to kill them. A reasonable and practical method should be employed.

It doesn’t matter why one wants to get rid of them, as long as one has a reason besides killing them. (Tuhfa al Muhtaj, Ibn Hajar)
