Sleight of Hand Tricks

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: Are sleight of hand tricks permissible to perform and watch?

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your important question.

Sleight of hand is not magic and therefore counts as normal entertainment. One-off performances are okay, but one should not get too busy by them.

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, ‘Anything that a Muslim man busies himself is false besides shooting his bow, training his horse, and fooling around with his family. These indeed of the truth’ (Ahmad and Tirmidhi).
