I hope this finds you well. I am sure you have probably answered questions like this before however this one is regarding Northern Ireland in particular. A local brother has chosen to open a shop for the Muslims in Belfast he already has a quite good wholesale outlet and this is only being done to try to satisfy the needs of the community. The question is regarding the fresh meat supply. In N. Ireland it is legal requirement that the animal is stunned before it is bled. There are two ways of stunning. The first is a light electric shock which stuns the animal but then it will recover to full consciousness within one minute. The other is a retractable bolt which also stuns the animal but could eventually lead to its death. As we have to abide by these laws can we claim this meat to be halal when the throat is cut by a responsible Muslim while the heart is still beating. I know that most people accept the light electric shock however there is a grey area surrounding the retracting bolt. At present the shock is used on chickens and the shock or bolt for lambs. They have no intention regarding cattle at the present.

I have a question regarding the permissibility of carrying out an abortion on babies with genetic diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis. Scientists can now actually determine at a stage (before 120 days) weather this child will suffer from CF. This disease basically involves the child growing up and living to the age of tops 30 years (if Allah Wills) and during these years the accumulation of bacteria and virus in the lungs due to sticky mucus causes 24/7 treatment of drugs. They would suffer many hardships during their life including being looked after. We studied this at college, and I know in the previous, the question has been asked about abortion. But would it still be permissible to carry out an abortion on this child knowing they would have a very serious condition during their short life? I mean, Abortion before 120 days when the ruh is inserted.

I have heard from many people that celebrating birthdays is wrong for Muslims as it is a practice that originated from the Christians and that we should not celebrate our birthdays. My Grandmother set up a trust fund to pay for education for her Grandchildren, but that we can ask for money from at any time, and any that is not used will be shared equally between the children as they each reach 25. Three have received theirs, and two have not. I recently asked for some money from this fund, and was sent an amount, but this time I noticed the money comes through a high interest account. I do not know either whether the shares are in halal companies, but could find this out insha’Allah. The shares are not in our names as far as I understand. When I was young I was told that alcohol was haram, the reason being that it intoxicates a person. Making him unaware of the external world, making him loose control of himself and imparing his judgement etc. I have friends who, like many youngsters are into drugs. Recently after having found one of my most dear friends to be involved in it, really saddened me. Though he was not into some hardcore drugs, he was into marijuana or ‘weed’ as it’s commonly known. I tried to stop him but he inturn told me things like…the scientific proof of it not being an addictive substance and also of it not being haram. He said it is nowhere written that its haram. But my explanation was that it was something that makes a person unaware of what is going on and the persons brain is slowed down etc…but since I myself dint know much about the matter I could do nothing. Brother I want to know if marijuana or anyother drugs are haram in Islam, so that I could provide my friend with a suitable answer.
