Are ceremonies like manje and sanchak allowed?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Are functions like mehndi, saanchak, Manje permissible at time of marriage? If not, are they are totally haram or just undesirable. I will be grateful if you could explain with some Quranic aayat and Hadith.

The Messenger of Allah has stated that whoever copies or resembles any nation or group, s/he will be counted as one of them. Because these rituals have been originated by and, in some parts of the world, are still currently being used by the non-Muslims, that’s why it is important to stay away from these types of rituals

The idea behind these rituals is of secluding the bride from the rest of the community, especially the groom’s side, for a few days before the actual marriage; which is OK. Just as putting Mehndi or other beauty tools on a lady before marriage is also correct. But to do these things with the intention of following a ritual is not correct.
