Country Law – Breaking Red Light

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Asalamualaikum.

Hazrat, whenever, I am in a rush especially when going to the mosque, I’ll pass through red lights when the streets are completely dead, and read “bismillah” in hope, I don’t get caught.

Is such behaviour considered sinful, literally?

الجواب وبالله التوفيق

It is mandatory to abide by the laws of the country one is residing in. The legislation of the countries is developed for the benefit of the individuals residing there. Therefore one should refrain from breaking the law. Breaking such laws are also considered as a sin and one should not recite Bismillah at such an occasion.
