Assalamualaikum
I have purchased a land some years ago with the intention of selling it once I will get good profit on selling it. This land is barren land and so we are not able to perform any cultivation and farming activity on it and since 8 yrs we are not getting anything out of it.
Do I need to pay Zakat for this land? Looking forward for immediate response.

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق
As your intention at the time of buying the property was to sell it when it’s profitable to sell, therefore, this piece of land will be counted as a business wealth and it will be mandatory to annually calculate its market value and pay Zakat on it.
عن سمرۃ بن جندب رضي اللّٰہ عنہ قال: أما بعد، فإن رسول اللّٰہ صلی اللّٰہ علیہ وسلم کان یأمرنا أن نخرج الصدقۃ من الذي نعد للبیع۔ (سنن أبي داؤد رقم: ۱۵۶۲)
وشرطہ، أي شرط افتراض أدائہا حولان الحول وہو فی ملکہ إلی قولہ: أونیۃ التجارۃ في العروض، إما صریحا ولابد من مقارنتہا لعقد التجارۃ۔(الدر المختار ۳؍۱۸۶ زکریا)
ثم نیۃ التجارۃ لا تعمل ما لم ینضم إلیہ الفعل بالبیع أو الشراء أو السوم فیما یسام ۔ (الفتاویٰ التاتارخانیۃ ۳؍۱۶۶ زکریا)
وتشترط نیۃ التجارۃ في العروض، ولابد أن تکون مقارنۃ للتجارۃ۔ (الاشباہ والنظائر ۳۸)
