Performing Umrah On Behalf Of A Living Person

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Ilyas Patel

Is it possible to perform umrah on behalf on a living person, with or without them knowing?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

The ruling of the  Umrah is that it is confirmed sunna (sunna mu’akkada ) to perform in one’s lifetime [Durr al-Mukhtar], which means that each morally responsible person will be discharged of this sunna, if he/she performs it himself/herself.

Yes, one can perform the Umrah and gift the reward to one’s living (with or without them knowing) or deceased but he/she will have to perform himself/herself to discharge the Sunna itself, if able.

And Allah alone gives success.
