Collecting money for Charity

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

We have a charity at the moment and during the Asian Earthquake we collected money for tents, however when we got to Pakistan there was so much Barakah in the money that only a fraction of the money collected was needed for the tents. Therefore we have been left with a surplus of funds. Would it be Halal to use these surplus funds for other causes that benefit the same group of people, for instance supplying Food and Water.

Basically, we collected money for a project and found we didn’t need that much, so can we use the same money for another project for the same beneficiaries?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

Yes, it would be permitted to reallocate charity funds collected for one project to other similar projects–because the fuqaha have stated that in such cases one can reasonably expect that those who gave the money did so to assist those in need, and not only to assist particular affected people.

And Allah alone gives success. Faraz Rabbani
