Bogus debt collectors

Q: My husband has recently handed his unpaid accounts owing to him, over to a debt collector. Recently he has found out that the debt collectors are frauds, they don’t exist. I know his debtors haven’t as yet settled their accounts with him, should he inform them of these bogus collectors.

A: If your husbands debtors have not yet paid their debts to the debt collectors, then your husband should inform them that they should not give the money to the debt collectors, instead they should pay it directly to him. However if they have already paid the money to the debt collectors, then since he had appointed the debt collectors to collect the money on his behalf, they (the debtors) will be absolved of their responsibility.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
