Q: When a recording like the voicemail on a telephone has a taped salaam, does one need to reply?
A: Yes, one should reply to the Salaam.

Q: Few days ago,an email was sent out regarding replying to a taped salaam. If it so,then will it be necessary to make sajdah e tilawat when heard over a cd? If not what is the difference between the two?
A: If one hears the sajdah-e-tilaawat on a tape or CD, sajdah-e-tilaawat will not be wajib. The reason is that in order for sjadah-e-tilaawat to be wajib, it has to be heard from someone whose tilaawat is considered by shariat e.g. a mukallaf. Hence, sajdah-e-tilaawat will not be wajib by hearing it from a person who is majnoon or a parrot. As far as replying to salaam heard on a voicemail, then this can be compared to a salaam which one receives via email, sms or a letter. When a person receives Salaams via a letter, then upon reading the Salaam for the first time it is wajib upon him to reply to the Salaam.

والأصل في وجوب السجدة أن كل من كان من أهل وجوب الصلاة إما أداء أو قضاء كان أهلا لوجوب سجدة التلاوة ومن لا فلا كذا في الخلاصة حتى لو كان التالي كافرا أو مجنونا أو صبيا أو حائضا أو نفساء أو عقيب الطهر دون العشرة والأربعين لم يلزمهم وكذا السامع كذا في الزاهدي ولو سمع منهم مسلم عاقل بالغ تجب عليه لسماعه ولو قرأ المحدث أو الجنب أو سمعا تجب عليهما وكذا المريض ولا تجب إذا سمعها من طير هو المختار ومن النائم الصحيح أنها تجب وإن سمعها من الصدى لا تجب عليه كذا في الخلاصة النائم إذا أخبر أنه قرأ آية السجدة في حال النوم تجب عليه وفي النصاب هو الأصح كذا في التتارخانية ولو قرأها سكران تجب عليه وعلى من سمعها كذا في محيط السرخسي المرأة إذا قرأت آية السجدة في صلاتها ولم تسجد لها حتى حاضت سقطت عنها السجدة كذا في المحيط (هندية 1/132)
