Definition of zaalim

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: What is the rulling about zaalims (oppressors), can you explain the definition of an oppressor?

Bismillaah

A: The word zaalim literally translates as ‘oppressor’ or ‘transgressor’. However, in the terminology of the Qur’aan and Hadith, it is used in one of three contexts.

The first is where a person wrongs himself through committing sins.

The second is where a person commits shirk and denies the zaaat of Allah Ta’ala or his sifaat.

The third is where a person oppressors any of the creation or transgressors the limits of Shari’ah when dealing with them.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
