Q: Is wasting water a major sin, how big of a sin is it?
A: Water is a ni’mat (favour) of Allah Ta’ala. Showing disregard to any favour of Allah Ta’ala is a sin. Regarding those who waste, Allah Ta’ala mentions in the Qur’an that they are the brothers of Shaitaan. In another verse Allah Ta’ala mentions that Allah Ta’ala does not like those who waste. Once we understand that this action is displeasing to Allah Ta’ala, then the sensible thing for a Muslim to do is to refrain from it. He should not ask whether it is a minor sin or a major sin.
And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
