Saying “Assalamu Alaikum” when greeting a single person

Q: please explain why we greet a single person by saying “Aslamu Alaikum not Alaika or Alaki” violating grammatical rules?

Bismillaah

A: The adab and etiquette is to say alaikum.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
