Issuing talaaq for residency purposes

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I am in U.S. on a visit visa. I got a girl to marry on contract but I am married in my country. In U.S. you can marry one lady at a time so I have to give one sided talaak to my first wife. It’s just for paper work. In real I don’t want to give my first wife talaak. Is it permissible in Islam because through this I will get permanent residency in the U.S.

Bismillaah

A: For whatever reason a talaaq is issued, the talaaq will be valid.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
