Forcing someone into marriage

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Can parents forcefully marry you to someone? Do they have the right? If no then what can we do to stop them for doing this. Also is there any wazeefa to soften their hearts and make them understand that we don’t like the particular guy they like for us?

Bismillaah

A: It is not permissible in Islam to force a baaligh girl into marriage against her wishes. If you are not happy to get married, then you should mention to your parents that you do not wish to get married to the person they intend marrying you to. If you are unable to explain to them, then we suggest that you speak to an elder of your family and ask them to explain to your parents your situation.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
