God’s Names and Verses on House Decorations

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mathabah.org

Question:

Is using the name of Allāh in the design of the grills of our terrace or windows permitted?

Answer:

In the Name of God, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Jazāk Allāh Khayr/ Thank you for your question.

The main purpose of God’s name is to be uttered sincerely by the tongue, in praise and glorification to Him, while in worship and remembrance of Him. That being said, it is mubā (allowed) to put the name of Allāh in a structural design provided the following conditions are met:

  • The intent should not only be for decoration, rather for a reminder to exalt the name of Allāh
  • One should firmly believe that blessings are not attained simply by hanging or designing the name of Allāh rather it is by reciting and articulating the name of Allāh
  • There should be no disrespect or disregard for the name of Allāh

“Whoever honours the signs of Allāh, indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.” (Qurʿān 22:32)

Disrespect to verses of the Qurʿān and Allāh’s name is damaging to one’s faith and may also lead to an act of kufr (disbelief). (See: Rad Al-Muḥtār)
