ICL EYE SURGERY

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by FatwaCentre.org
Question

I wanted to opt for ICL eye surgery for vision correction. However I was told my the optometrist that the lens that they’ll put inside my eye has 0.3% extracts from a pig. They also said they had a fatwa from saudi and Egypt and said it’s very minimal so it’s allowed. So I wanted to ask if you could please shed some light on this matter for me.

Answer

We have tried contacting manufacturers to understand how the lens is formed, however, we have not received responses which help us with issuing a ruling. Based on your optometrist’s understanding that these lens contain 0.3% pig extract we would deem the use of such lenses impermissible. Our religion has a very firm stance on the consumption and use of anything derived from pigs. Permissibility has only been granted in extreme circumstances such as when there is fear for one’s life and no lawful alternatives are available. As this is not the case, it would impermissible to have such a lens implanted in your eye.
