Answer

(Fatwa: 1015/1015/M=1432)

In the fardh salah of four rakah if one forgets sitting on fourth rakah and stands for fifth rakah, then if he is alerted before performing the sajdah of fifth rakah he should at once sit and after reading al-tahiyat etc should perform sajdah sahv, his salah shall be valid. And if one is alerted after performing the sajdah of fifth rakah, then the fardh was annulled, he should add one more rakah and complete the sixth rakah and all the six rakahs shall be nafl and he will not have to perform sajdah sahv. And if he did not add one more rakah, the first four rakahs became nafl and one (fifth) rakah was annulled.

However, if on fourth rakah after performing qa’dah one stands for fifth rakah by mistake, then he should sit before sajdah if one remembers it and do salam and sajdah sahv and finally complete his salah. But if one remembered after performing the sajdah of fifth rakah he should add one rakah and complete sixth rakah and also do sajdah sahv in sixth rakah. Thus, the first four rakah shall be fardh and the last two will be nafl.
