Can I read poem, novel, and stories? Someone say that it is not right to read them even if you avoid haram writings. But this thing helps to increase general knowledge and idea about my society and sometimes about the world. So, is it not okay to read these things?

If the verses of the poem and song do not contain unlawful things then you may read them. It is also right to read ethical and reformative stories as well. It is unlawful to read nasty and obscene stories.
