Self Hypnosis and Meditation in Islam: Halal or Haram?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q:

1. In islam can you listen to self hypnosis? Basically self hypnosis is deep relaxation then you do visualisation or make suggestions. I want to know is it haram or halal?

2. What about meditation, is it halal or haram?

Bismillaah

A:

1. Many of these arts and therapies border with wrong cults and eventually lead a person towards corrupt beliefs. Hence, we strongly discourage these types of arts.

2. Guided meditation under the guidance of a shaikh will obviously bring a person to true realisation. Hence, it is not only permissible but encouraged, for example when one meditates over the wrongs he has committed and the need to correct himself, etc.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
