Is wudu necessary after changing baby’s diaper?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by IslamicSolutions.org

Shortened Question:

Is wudu necessary after changing baby’s diaper?

Question:

Sometimes I baby sit my grandson for my daughter. He climbs unto me during Salat. Hence, I check to see if his diaper needs changing before I start my Salat. Do I need to refresh my wudu if I change his diaper?

 Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

One’s wudu breaks if he/she experiences one of the breakers of wudu, for example if he/she passes wind.[1]

The urine or excrete of a small baby does not break one’s wudu, but is najis (impure) and should be washed off before performing Salat.[2]

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
