Do I have to pay Zakaat on money paid as installments?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Dear Sir,

Assalamualikum !!

I purchased a plot worth Rs.2 lakhs in installments. I have already paid 1 lakh and remaining is due which I shall pay in installments in regular intervals. The plot will be register in my name when I pay the total amount.

My question is the amount I paid to the owner of the plot i.e., 1 lakh should be accounted in paying my early zakat.

Jazakallah khair.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

You are not obligated to pay Zakaat (alms) on the 1 Lakh in the scenario in reference.[1]
