Is Sura al Kawthar Sufficient To Read In The Prayer?

Question:

Assalamu ‘Alaykum.

Is Sura al Kawthar sufficient to read in the prayer? When can we skip a sura?

Answer:

Wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.

I pray you are well.

Yes, Sura al Kawthar is sufficient in any unit of any prayer after the Fatiha. Three verses in the wajib amount, and any three verses can do this – even short ones like the first three of Sura al Rahman (Qur’an, 55).

You can skip any sura in your recitation from the beginning of the Qur’an to Sura al Bayyina (Qur’an, 98). It is disliked to skip any sura from the next sura (al Zalzala) to the end, as they are short, and it would seem like one dislikes it. If it does happen, it will not affect the validity of the prayer in any way. (Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al Muhtar) This applies to the fard and the non-fard prayers.

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.
