Building a mosque or jamaat khana in the vicinity of another mosque

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: what is the ruling concerning building a mosque or jamaat khana in the vicinity of another mosque..i.e., if a mosque is already present in an area, can one build another mosque or jamaat khana nearby (e.g., withing walking distance)?

Bismillaah

A: If the masjid’s capacity can easily accommodate the musalli congregation in that locality, then there is no need to build another masjid in such close proximity. However if the masjid’s capacity cannot manage accommodating the musalli congregation, then the present masjid should be extended in order to fulfill the need of the community. If extending the masjid is not possible, then another masjid can be built in that locality in order to fulfill the needs of the community.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
