Nibaaz

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwa.org.au
Can you please explain the word ‘nibaaz’ mentioned in Sahih Bukhari in hadith number 368?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Nibaaz (literally: to throw) is a particular way of two people selling their fabrics to each other that was in vogue during the jahiliyyah times. In Nibaaz, two people with fabrics would agree to throw their fabric to each other without each seeing the other person’s fabric in advance. They would then have to keep the fabric they received from each other in lieu of the fabric they threw to each other, whether (after seeing the fabric thrown at them) they agree to the exchange or not. This practise is forbidden in Islam as the hadith mentions.
