Cheating on Exams

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: I have cheated many times throughout my years of schooling. Is it permissible to use my high school certificate to apply to university or the like?

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your important question.

Using a certificate that you do not deserve is not permissible.

My advice would be to go to the school itself, talk to the principal or examinations officer, and see if there is any real need to revoke your certificate. If they don’t see any real issue, then I would go ahead and use it because that means you are not fooling anyone else.

From experience, honesty is indeed the best policy, and by the baraka of your sincerity and fear of Allah, you may find it opens doors that you never expected.

‘And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah, He is sufficient for him’ (Qur’an, 65: 3).
