Using Interest Money for Legal Fees and Fines: Is it Possible?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Can interest money be used to pay lawyers and fines?

Bismillaah

A:

1. It is not permissible for one to intentionally accumulate interest money. However if interest money had come in one’s possession unintentionally, one should immediately dispose of it through giving it to the poor without the intention of reward. Interest money cannot be used to pay for any services. Hence one cannot use interest money to pay for lawyer’s fees.

2. According to some Ulama, interest money can be used to pay fines.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
