Q: Are “smileys” regarded as pictures (tasweer) in shariat? And is it permissible to use them?  A:  All pictures of animate objects are forbidden in Islam.  We have always been taught not to wear moorat/clothing with eyes and animate objects on them. We have been told recently that if an object like a cartoon character even if it be a car has eyes drawn/painted on it, is then not considered as moorat. This is because a car is not an animate object. Is this correct?
