Wiping on a Torn Khuff

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Shafiifiqh.com

Question:
As salamu alaykum,
I know that mash is permissible on leather-socks. But what if there is a hole in it or tiny rips, can one still perform mash? One of my leather-socks, for example, has a tiny hole as wide as two stitching holes. The Sahabah (Rady Allahu anhum) wore ripped clothing too, I think. I hope you can answer the question quickly in sha Allah and may Allah reward you for your efforts.

Answer:

Wa alaykum salam wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatuHu,

There are specific conditions that apply to wiping on one’s khuff. From those conditions is that the khuff is free from any hole or tear. Thus, it is not permissible to wipe on such a khuff even if the tear is small, because in that instance it does not cover all of the foot. The foot’s being exposed requires that it be washed [ghasl]. And its being covered allows that it be wiped over. It is not permissible to join between washing and wiping at the same time. (Mughni al-Muhtaj 1/66)

And Allah the Exalted knows best.
