Do the toes need to touch the ground in sujud?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Shafiifiqh.com

Question:

Should the toes touch the ground while prostrating?

Country: Sri Lanka

Answer:

Wa alaykum salam wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatuHu,

The Prophet Muhammad said,

أمرت أن أسجد على سبعة أعظم…وأطراف القدمين

“I have been commanded to prostrate on seven bones…and the extremities of the two feet.”

Here, the inner part of the toes is intended. Thus, in prostration [sujud], a portion of the toes’ inner part must touch the ground. (Tuhfat al-Muhtaj 2/71-72)

And Allah knows best.
