Pants Below Ankles in the Shafi’i School

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: Assalam ‘aleykum

In Shafi’i fiqh is it allowed to hang pants below the ankles?

Answer: In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

It is offensive (makruh) in the Shafi`i school to wear one’s garment below one’s ankles, but not unlawful (haram). The hadiths that seem to indicate unlawfulness are understood to refer to someone who does it out of arrogance, in which case the action becomes unlawful.
