What is the ruling on the call to prayer, adhan, at the time of lowering a dead body in the grave? We do so in our community, however, some of the learned disapprove of it and say it is an innovation.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

There is a difference of opinion in the madhab on the issue of calling the adhan at the time of lowering the dead into the grave.

It’s been said that it is sunnah, by analogy to his first exit into this world. The great scholar, Ibn Hajar mentions in Al-Tuhfa (vol. 1, p. 461) that according to the most relied upon opinion it is not a sunnah.

Since there is this difference of opinion, one may not forbid those who practice it, as our previously mentioned scholar [Shaykh Muhammad al-Khatib of Tarim] said in the previous question, and Allah knows best.
