When Does One Become a Mahram Through Nursing?

Answered by Shaykh Amjad Rasheed

Can I marry the son of my maternal aunt if my maternal grandmother nursed him? My grandmother only nursed him once before he reached two years. I tried to find the answer in Saheeh Al-Bukhari, but I didn’t find anything useful except for the commentator’s note that the rulings related to nursing are established by five feedings. I read in Saheeh Muslim that one or two feedings are of no consequence.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

The questioner can marry the man she mentions in the question because prohibition [m: of marriage] through nursing is only established when one is certain that five feedings have taken place.
