Answered by Shaykh Amjad Rasheed
Is it permissible for a person who is balding to have surgery to implant human hair, animal hair or artificial hair on to his head?
The scholars have explained the rulings on attaching other hair to one’s hair, and there is some detail. It is understood that implanting hair takes the same ruling as attaching hair to one’s own hair.
If the hair is from a human, then it is completely haram for a man or woman to use it, whether the husband permits it or not. This is out of honoring mankind that its parts not be used, but rather buried.
Also, it is haram if the hair is from an animal, non-human, if a man wants to attach it.
If a woman wants to attach it, there is some detail:
a) If the hair is filth, such that it came from a dead animal, or that it separated from an animal that cannot be eaten, during its life, such as a lynx, it is haram, whether the husband permits it or not.
b) If the hair is taken from a pure animal, such as the hair taken during the life of an animal that can be eaten, or after it is slaughtered, it is permissible to use it if the husband permits, even if just for beautification. If he does not permit it, it is haram.
It should also be known that it is completely haram for a woman who is unmarried to attach anything at all to her hair.
If attachment of hair, or implanting it, is done with artificial hair, such as threads of silk and the like, if it does not resemble real hair, then it is perfectly permissible for a man or woman to attach it, whether the husband permits it or not. If it does resemble hair, it is not permissible to use for the man, but it is permissible for a woman if her husband permits it. This is what is taken from the sayings of our imams, in text and in meaning. One may refer to this in al-Mughni and al-Nihayah with the commentaries of the erudite scholar, Ali al-Shibramilsi, about them, and Allah knows best.
