Praying for Deceased Non-Muslim Relatives

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Amjad Rasheed

Is it permissible to supplicate for one’s relatives if they have died as non-Muslims?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

It is permissible to supplicate that their punishment be lightened for them. As for praying that they be forgiven, taken out of the fire, and entered into Paradise, it is forbidden because of His Most High’s saying, “Surely, Allah does not forgive that anything be associated with Him.” (4:48)
