Making Hajj While Paying off your Home Mortgage

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by FatwaCentre.org

Question
A friend of mine was planning to join the hajj group, but he was informed by some of his friends that since he is making mortgage on his house, he can not go for hajj until he pays off his house… My friend called me and asked me to find out if this is true… My friend bought his house last year and he still has about 30 more years to pay off his house? Assalamu alaykum

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious Most Merciful

It is permissible for him to go for hajj if he can continue to make his payments on time and will not delay in the repayment. The only time he should not go for hajj is if it will hinder his payments and incur more interest, charges etc.

So if such problems are not likely to occur he can go, and should go if he thinks it will benefit him and help him become closer to Allah.

You must remember, though, that since he is in debt hajj is not fard on him, but if he goes it will be accepted as his Hajjat al-Islam.
