Combining gold and cash for Zakaat calculation purposes

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. I have gold and no cash. The gold is under the Nisaab amount. If I get cash, how do I give Zakaat?

A. In the enquired situation, if you possess gold only, which is under the gold threshold value (87.48g), Zakaat is not payable on the gold.

However, if you have other Zakaatable assets or if gold and cash is in your possession on your Zakaatable date, then you will combine the gold and cash, and discharge the Zakaat of it (2.5%), if its total value reaches the silver threshold value (612.35g) which is currently R4127.30 as of 12/04/2018 in South Africa.
