Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Tafseer Raheemi

Salaam mualana saab. Can u clarify what ahnaaf say regarding nafl salah after maghrib azan and before iqamah, i am aware of a hadith in bukhari thru abdullah ibn mughfaal rusoollah said “bwteen every 2 calls of prayer there is a prayer for one who wishes to pray it. One aalim here has stated not only is it permissible but mustahab also to do this.

Walaikumussalam

According to fiqh hanafi, in fact Shafi’ee and Maliki as well, it’s makrooh.

The reason is that it causes the delay of salatul Maghrib, which should be performed as soon as the sun sets. This is why we shouldn’t delay the Iftar too much either.

This nafl was prayed by some sahaba, Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam never prayed it but he didn’t stop those who rushed to it. If he had prayed this nafl even once we could have said it’s mustahabb.

Just like miswak before salah, he never did it, only one sahabi did it, as it is in the Hadith of tirmizi.
Wassalam
