Becoming Hafiz requires lots of effort from the memorizer. Professional Hifz teachers estimate that most people can become Hafiz in less than three years. They say that the best time to memorise is early in the morning. You should wake up early in the morning and sit to pray in a quiet room, with no distractions nearby. Learn your day’s sabak, and keep repeating it throughout the day. By the time you pray to your teacher, you should not be getting any mistakes. Learn your week’s sabak para very well, and you should have no problems with your revision dohr. Duas you can pray include رَبِّي زِدْنِي عِلْماً and رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي and there is also a long dua at the end of the 13-line Quran that you can pray.
You should also stay away from sin, as sins will decrease your ability to memorise. Imam Shafi, whose madhab is followed by hundreds of millions of Muslims, once complained to his teacher that his memory wasn’t good enough. His teacher advised him to stay away from sins, because ilm is light from Allah, and Allah does not give His light to sinners.
