When should I raise the index finger in Salaah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Tafseer Raheemi

Question

Assalamu Alaikum.
Ramadhan Kareem.
I am glad to know that you accept questions. Alhamdulillah.
I have a question regarding Salah. I am confused when to rise/ point the Index finger during Tashahud.
What I do is, I raise my index finger upon saying “Ashhadu Anla Illaha Ilallah wa ashhadu anna Muhammad darrasullullah.” (On first tashahud, if praying for 4rakat).
And I rise/point my Index finger again on the 4th rakat during tashahud when saying “Ashhadu Anla Illaha Ilallah wa ashhadu anna Muhammad darrasullullah.” after that I rest it, bring it down. Rise/point it again (for the 2nd time) when saying Allahumma Salli Alla Muhammad (on this part only, then I rest it. Continue with the dua… Upon saying Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammad (I rise it again for the 3rd time and rest after Muhammad and continue the dua.)
I am confuse if what I am doing is right.

If I am not mistaken our Teacher advise us to rise/ point the index upon saying “Allahumma”.

Please help me clear my confusion.

Thank you and May Allah guide us.

Sincerely,
Ms. Nur-aine Sangki

Answer

In Salah, the more calmer you are the better and more closer to Sunnah. Whereas, the more movements you make, the further you will go away from the Sunnah. Therefore, the index finger should only be raised once, on “Ashhadu Allah Ilaha” and put back down on “Illallahu”.
