Is it permissible for women to tie their hair up in high buns?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Tafseer Raheemi

Question:

Is it permissible for women to tie their hair up in high buns?

Answer:

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.
Tying hair up in high buns will be either inside the house in front of the husband or outside in front of other people. The first could be allowed, not the second. I used the words ‘could be’ because there is a possibility of Tashabbuh, imitation, emulation and copying. If it falls into that category, then we are not allowed to be copycats. We have our guidance from Allah and His Rasul which we should follow – I recall here the hadith of Sahih Muslim, in which Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam used the words

I.e. Their heads will be like the leaning humps of a Bakhti camel – He said this while mentioning a grave warning for such habits. Therefore, it is best to avoid this and to just use normal style of making plaits.
