Thoughts During Salah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Asalamualaikum.

I wanted to confirm, when one is distracted in salah with dunya, or even sinful related stuff for prolonged periods, I understand the salah is valid, but is the salah makrooh? If, so to what extend? Is it possible the salah can be valid, but devoid of any reward?

الجواب وبالله التوفيق

The involuntary (or unintentional) thoughts passing through one’s mind during salah do not invalidate the salah. However the thoughts brought voluntarily into one’s mind on purpose, does render the salah as makrooh and there is definite loss in the reward for that salah. One should envision about the greatness and majesty of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta‘alaand perform salah in such a manner as if one is seeing Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta‘alaand Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta‘alais seeing them. InshahAllah such thoughts will subside.
